Welcome to Blue Wave Taekwondo of Beverly

We are a community where motivated students of all ages join together to learn traditional Korean Taekwondo in a disciplined, supportive, and authentic environment. Our instructors are passionate practitioners who volunteer their time because they believe in the lifelong value of Taekwondo and in helping students grow in confidence, skill, and character. Students here learn strong fundamentals, develop physical and mental resilience, and train within a friendly, respectful community. All of our black belts are Kukkiwon-certified and maintain Chung Do Kwan certification, ensuring instruction rooted in authentic Korean lineage and internationally recognized standards.

Our History in Beverly

Blue Wave Taekwondo’s lineage in Beverly begins with Grandmaster Michael Anthony (8th Dan), who began training in 1974 under Chung Do Kwan Master Hak Joo Lee. Over the following years, he trained extensively in both Chung Do Kwan and Song Moo Kwan, opened a Beverly Taekwondo school in 1980, and later joined Blue Wave in 1989 under Master Bruce V. Twing and Grandmaster Tae Sung Lee. Master Anthony’s dedication to strong fundamentals, honest training, and community-focused instruction established the foundation for what Beverly Blue Wave is today.

Our Instructors

Our instructors train actively within the Blue Wave Taekwondo Association and uphold Kukkiwon and Chung Do Kwan standards. Students who want to pursue advanced training or competition benefit from high-level guidance and access to Blue Wave’s broader network of senior masters and experienced athletes.

Michael Anthony, 8th Dan — Grandmaster

Grandmaster Anthony began his Taekwondo training in 1974 under Chung Do Kwan Master Hak Joo Lee in Salem, Massachusetts. Over the years, he earned his 8th Dan black belt certified by the Kukkiwon and has been teaching Taekwondo since 1980. In addition to his Taekwondo expertise, he has trained extensively in Ju Gar and Wing Chun Kung Fu under Master Kenneth Wong and spent more than three decades working in security, personal protection, and self- defense. He is a SPEAR/Personal Defense Readiness certified coach and the creator of the Blue Wave Self-Defense curriculum. A founding member of the Boston Guardian Angels and a longtime operations specialist with PRTM, Grandmaster Anthony brings a lifetime of real-world experience to his understanding of martial arts and conflict avoidance. Known for the strong fundamentals, humility, and community-focused values he instilled in Beverly, he remains a respected part of the Blue Wave community and continues to support the school’s tradition of disciplined, authentic training.

Jonathan Scoglio, 6th Dan — Master Instructor

Master Scoglio has been training in Taekwondo since 1992 and has spent more than three decades learning, teaching, and contributing to the Blue Wave Taekwondo Association. He earned his black belt in 1997 and later traveled to South Korea with fellow Beverly black belts to visit the Kukkiwon and train with Grandmaster Tae Sung Lee. Throughout his training, he has continually expanded his expertise by participating in advanced sparring seminars, such as the Elite Taekwondo program in Texas, completing specialized self-defense trainings (including Tony Blauer’s SPEAR system and Personal Defense Readiness program), and maintaining ongoing practice with senior Blue Wave masters. Outside the dojang, Master Scoglio is a longtime social worker with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, bringing a career shaped by patience, steadiness, and a deep commitment to helping others into his teaching style. His extensive experience, humility, and dedication to high-quality Taekwondo make him a trusted and motivating instructor for students of all ages and levels.

Josh Burlingham, 6th Dan — Master Instructor

Master Burlingham began training with Beverly Blue Wave in 2001 and has been a dedicated student and instructor for more than two decades. He trained continuously through high school, college, and law school, earning his black belt in 2006 and competing in the Ivy-Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League (INCTL) (now, the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC)) while at Cornell University. During law school, he balanced his dedication to Taekwondo with rigorous academic demands, providing Taekwondo instruction at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Over the years, Master Burlingham has medaled in numerous poomsae competitions and values the opportunity to learn from and connect with practitioners across the wider Taekwondo community. He currently works as a financial technology and regulatory attorney at an internationally recognized AmLaw 50 firm in Boston while continuing to train and teach in Beverly as an active member of the Blue Wave community. Master Burlingham’s thoughtful approach to instruction is shaped by years of committed practice, competition experience, and a deep respect for Taekwondo’s core values, helping students of all ages to grow in skill, confidence, and discipline.
